On the hubbub that is Prince Street in the area otherwise known as SoHo, there is a barista who brings back the romance to cappuccinos. His name is Peter and he is one of many who operate the overheating caffeine conveyor belt at Dean and Deluca.
Hand crafting espresso-based beverages to the throngs of SoHo’s tourists with sincere passion and friendliness, Peter isn’t the least bit contrived in his mannerisms. That’s right Stumptown. I love your coffee but it need not always be served with a shot of irony, a coiffed mustache, and a fedora of some sort.
Peter reminds me of my teenage barista days, when working behind the espresso machine contributed to the coffeehouse experience America seemed to have lost somewhere in the last decade.
If you’re lucky to have him make your drink, appreciate his grace and friendliness behind the counter. Thank him for making a cappuccino that cradles milk, froth, and espresso, all in good harmony.
